Wingate University is a private 4-year university located in Wingate, North Carolina. Wingate is just six miles outside of Monroe, North Carolina, the county seat of Union. The campus is 30 miles from Charlotte. Founded in 1896, Wingate University is located on a beautiful 400-acre campus.
The university offers 34 undergraduate majors. College degrees awarded include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music Education. Among the graduate degrees offered are Master of Business Administration, Master of Medical Assistant, Doctorate of Education and Doctorate in Pharmacy. Pre-professional programs are offered in law, medicine, veterinary science, and ministry.
The majority of Wingate’s 2,100 students live on campus. Accommodation options include the more traditional suite-style bedrooms and new, fully-equipped apartments. Wingate University offers 8 national fraternities and sororities. There are many interest clubs available to students, as well as campus publications and a campus television station. Weekend Blitz gives all students access to a variety of off-campus activities at little or no cost.
Athletics is popular in Wingate. The “Bulldogs” compete on 19 NCAA Division II sports teams in the South Atlantic Conference. Some of the sports offered for men and women at Wingate University are soccer, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, golf, and tennis. The volleyball team is the four-time defending conference champion. Intramural sports are also popular. Wingate’s excellent sports facilities include a soccer stadium, fitness center, and recreation complex including tennis courts.
Wingate University is located just six miles from the city of Monroe, North Carolina. Monroe, a small city of 36,000 people, is 25 miles southeast of Charlotte. Monroe’s historic main street is lined with restaurants and small shops. The Victorian courthouse is the centerpiece of the city center. Movies and other entertainment are regular summer events at the Downtown Plaza. The first Belk department store opened in downtown Monroe in 1888. Monroe’s mild climate makes outdoor activities enjoyable year-round. There are 13 golf courses in the area, as well as hiking trails, horseback riding and bass fishing.
