Training your pit bull terrier with dog treats

Every responsible Pit Bull owner wants a well-trained pet. There are several training options that can be used to achieve the desired results. One of the most popular methods used by owners is treat training. Treat training is a reward system that uses the dog’s favorite snack, such as cheese, hot dog bits, or store-bought treats.

Treat training allows the owner to use these small bits as a form of positive reinforcement for good behavior. Proper use of treat training will allow you to teach your Pit Bull to follow sit, come, and lie down commands, as well as teach him just about any trick you can think of. If used with friendly rubs and praise, it can also help you to housebreak your Pit Bull.

To teach your pitbull to sit, you will need to prepare a bag of treats right before you start. I highly recommend a plastic zipper bag to use as a treat container. It allows you to put the treats in your pocket while allowing you to keep your pockets from getting dirty and soggy. Trust me, try it without the bag and you’ll never try it that way again. This is especially true if you choose to use table food pieces, like cheese slices and hot dogs.

Decide what you will use as a gift. Think about what your Pit Bull likes to eat, but you don’t feed it very often. This is an irresistible kickback, and you will see faster results than if you had used a daily treatment. Once you have chosen your bribe, put the bag in your pocket so you can easily reach it. Don’t try to hold the bag in your hand, as this will distract your pitbull and may even cause him to jump up to try and grab the entire bag.

If you have more than one pit bull or other dog, take the time to put the other dog away so you can do some one-on-one training. Other animals in the vicinity will only get in the way of your training, as your Pit Bull will think of the session as a competition for which the dog can get the prize faster, rather than obedience training.

Now that you’ve packed your bag of goodies and have your pit bull alone with you, it’s time to get started.

Take a bit of your chosen treat and hold it over your pit bull’s head as you give the command to “sit.” If you hold the treat up, the dog will have to sit up to see the treat. Once he sits down, give him the treat and be sure to praise him as a “good boy” for sitting down. You can repeat this four or five more times, but after that, let it rest until the next day. I know it doesn’t sound like a rigorous workout, but it’s considered a full session.

Once your Pit Bull has mastered the “sit” command, start offering gentle massages and praise instead of treats. You will eventually eliminate the food treats and your Pit Bull will continue to sit on command.

Using treat training is an effective and gentle way to train your Pit Bull. It also allows you to be close to your pet for a treat and praise session. Imagine how much your Pit Bull will enjoy!
