The Vacant Heart of Milan
Milan is a modern city that moves fast, and that often doesn’t seem to notice the past around it. But a visit to this Italian metropolis can reveal a whole new side to its history, and a city that’s not only vibrant but also filled with a surprising amount of history.
It isn’t just the skyline that’s changing in Milan, though: The Vacant Heart of the city itself is undergoing an exciting transformation as well. It’s now a hub for entrepreneurs and creative minds, where the best of Italy’s art, design and culture can be found in one place.
Designed by architecture firm CRA, this project is set to turn the streets of Milan into an oasis of greenery. Known as VITAE, the idea is to connect the public with the natural environment by creating vine-covered pergolas and terraces for urban farming.
The Vacant Heart of Milan: Exploring an Empty Metropolis
The project was developed by CRA for real estate group covivio, with collaboration from environmental experts habitech. This ‘green ring’ will link the city’s main attractions and businesses, creating spaces for people to interact with nature without ever leaving the city centre.
Another project in the works is to bring the waterways of Milan back to life. This canal network was once traced throughout the city, but it was covered over in the mid-20th century to make way for more modern structures.
On a sunny day, it’s possible to walk through the historic streets of Milan’s old town and enjoy some of the best views of the city. But if you want to get away from the crowds, head out of town into Isola, where you’ll find some incredible street art and colourful buildings.
If you’re looking to see a bit more of the city and its history, it is well worth checking out Castello Sforzesco. It is one of the largest castles in Europe, and is home to 10 museums. There’s something for everyone here – from art and architecture to furniture, sculpture and musical instruments.
It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine in peace and quiet. There are a few cafes and restaurants to choose from, as well as a few bars for nightlife.
You can even stroll through the park, Parco Sempione, which is one of Milan’s main green areas and a lovely place to relax in the summertime. This is also the location for many outdoor festivals and events, so there’s a lot to see and do here.
Take a walk along the Grand Canal, or stop by a few of the many shops and markets in the area to pick up some bargains for yourself! You’ll find a lot of things to bargain for here, from retro telephones to art deco furniture.
If you’re visiting Milan in winter, don’t miss the chance to experience a unique snowfall on the Navigli canals. When the weather is icy, the surface of the canal freezes and reflects the lights of the bar terraces and cafes, creating an incredibly magical atmosphere!
