• Tennis fans saw a streak that has remained intact since 1886 when Roy Emerson won his 12th Grand Slam tennis title. The Grand Slams of tennis consist of the four major tennis tournaments: the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. However, in the year 2000, tennis great Pete Sampras of the United States United won Wimbledon, making it their 13th Grand Slam victory in tennis. His career ended in 2003 with 14 Grand Slam tennis wins; the last was a win at the US Open in 2002.
• At 24, golfing sensation Tiger Woods won the British Open. This victory made him the youngest player to have won all 4 major golf tournaments, the Masters Tournament in Augusta, the US Open which was played in Pebble Beach, California, the British Open which was played in St Andrews, Scotland and the PGA Championship which was played in Louisville, Kentucky.
• Baseball fans watched the first “underground” World Series when the New York Mets played the New York Yankees in the 2000 World Series, and Americans across the United States felt the excitement of baseball in the Big Apple. In the end, the New York Mets were victorious in Game 5 at their home field, Shea Stadium. It was the Mets’ 26th World Series title. • Boxer Evander Holyfield won his fourth world heavyweight boxing championship. He beat Juan Ruiz.
