Hiking in Peru

Hiking

Lots of people come to Peru to hike the Inca Trail, but there are plenty of other fantastic options open to hikers of all skill levels. Cusco is the main trekking center in the south and Huaraz in the north.

It is always best to book any trek through a reputable agent where your safety is paramount. Most trekking equipment can be rented; however, it is advisable to wear your own with hiking boots to avoid terrible blisters. The most rewarding time to hike is during the dry season from May to September. It is certainly possible to walk at other times of the year; just be prepared for daily rain, poor visibility and wet tents.

The ultimate trek in Peru is the world famous trail to Machu Picchu. Spaces for the trail are limited to 500 per day, including porters and guides, and fill up quickly. It is advisable to book at least 3 months in advance and for the high season, 4-6 months in advance. Please note that the Inca Trail vacations are closed for the entire month of February each year for their annual cleaning. If you can’t get a spot on the trail, there are plenty of alternative hikes, including the Salkantay and Lares trails.

The Cordillera Blanca near Huaraz has some impressive peaks, while the nearby Cordillera Huayhuash is simply stunning. Treks from 1 day to 10 days can be arranged in Huaraz, but be sure to give yourself as much time as possible before your trek to acclimatise.
