The legal profession is one where you have to work your way up. You have to be used to working hard and socializing as both are equally important in their own right and more importantly they have their own uses. The first thing you need to know is that when you take a job as an entry-level attorney at a good firm, you have a hundred other people who will do anything to be in your shoes. The good news is that they are not the ones who have done it, but you. So, the important part is that you don’t let this opportunity slip from your hand. So what do you do when you’ve managed to land one of those entry-level law jobs and want to make it big soon? The first rule to follow is, work hard!
In any company you are expected to work to the fullest! The fact is that there will be times when you feel like giving up altogether. To succeed in this field, that is the first thing you must do, suppress all urges to quit. The workload is tremendous and you will have to learn to take it or you will not have a future in this industry. The next thing you need to do is win the cases you have. The initial cases on your desks will be minor, but when you start getting the bigger ones, you’ll know you’re on the right track.
Socializing is an unmentioned prerequisite for any entry level legal job. You should know people who can help you call in favors when it comes to your profession. The worst thing is that you may not like any of the people you meet, but you still need to have them on hand. Later, these people will play an important role in getting your work done through their small but important contributions. At that point, you might even start to like them!
When an entry-level attorney starts to catch the eye of those higher up the table, those are the moments when you can understand that something is going on. Therefore, he must always be on the good side of everyone higher up the chart and never have ego issues with them. Having ego issues with your bosses will almost kill your career or at least make it nearly impossible to climb the ladder.
If you start working after accepting an entry level paralegal job then the whole shift will be more difficult and your growth will be limited and then you will have to rely more on your social skills than on your ability to think. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that every job in this industry requires effort if you want to move up.
