When planning your trip to the desert

When you’re planning your nature trip, have a plan, even if you’re hiking for a few hours.

It is important to pack more water than you think you will use, nuts and dried fruits, layers of clothing for unexpected changes in weather conditions. You will want to bring a compass because cell phones are not reliable. Pack a blanket, extra socks, flashlight, matches, and flint; pack anything that will help you survive a night in the wild.

Plan your route and dress according to the type of terrain you will encounter while walking. Check for any bear, fire, flood, or trail closure alerts before setting off. It is important to tell a friend, family member, parents your destination and route, time of departure and arrival back to the camp. If you are driving to your destination, verbally tell a trusted friend the type, color, and license plate number. Walking alone is dangerous, so call a friend to join you.

If you get lost, STOP

Stop – start by removing your backpack and sitting in a comfortable place. Begin by slowing down your breathing. Close your eyes and, as you inhale through your nose with a controlled breath, feel the breath begin to fill your stomach and then the chest area. When you get to the point where you can’t breathe in again, you will hold on for 3 seconds and then slowly and with control, you will exhale with pursed lips. Relax your shoulders and make your mind listen to the sounds and repeat.

Think: The reason for the exercise above is to help you think clearly about how to overcome the situation in a positive way. You’ll be better able to prioritize if you have a clear mind and don’t panic.

Observe: evaluate what you have in your backpack, is there anything that can serve as a shelter? Are there plants or animals for the food and water supply nearby? Don’t move at all until you have a particular reason to take a step. As a last resort, follow a stream downhill.

Plan: After completing the above task, plan your next step. How can you best adapt to your situation? You have a better chance of survival if you think in a positive frame of mind. Put your plan into action by setting fire, getting water, and building / seeking shelter. You don’t sit on the ground expecting to be found in an hour or YOU WILL DIE!
