Virtua School – Text Based PC Role Playing Games

Whether your high school is great or not, there are few things more fun than emotionally awkward teens. I can’t speak for you (though I’ll try), but the combination of hormones, pimples, and unwarranted self-importance turns teens into some of the funniest little things ever. To think that there are RPG downloads for these things! Two fun friends by the name of Dana Lodico and Josh Noe agree with me and have put together a delicious mouthful of playful goodness called Virtua School. I’m not kidding when I say this is one of my all-time favorite text-based PC RPGs.

Premise

Virtua School puts you, yes you, in action. To think that those novelty games have the nerve to call themselves immersive when they don’t even allow you to use your own name! While all the Virtua School events may have happened to you, chances are you have to use your imagination a bit, especially if you are a straight woman. Your day starts in the morning (wake up late, as always), and you already have an important decision to make: take a shower or catch the bus on time. The horror!

From there, you meet a number of hilariously miserable teenagers throughout the day, from your friend Bob to a gay man named Leon. The goal of the game is to balance your ratings, popularity, and wealth, as well as achieve various honorable mentions. Aside from its humor, Virtua School beats every other PC RPG I’ve played as more playable. Discovering different paths to chase all these prizes makes for a truly amazing game. Seemingly insignificant decisions will affect the way the rest of the game is played, and randomly generated content keeps things fresh even if you play the same way. No other RPG download comes close.

Well, look at all the pretty colors!

Installation

The game is designed to run on a DOS platform, so DOSBox is a must. If you need help setting it up, the DOSBox wiki has a specific page for you. I’m telling you, no other PC RPG is worth the job.

Get the game for free on the Virtua School website. Just download it to a directory you will remember, run DOSBox, mount the directory, and run Virtua! After playing it for a while, visit the Virtua School website to see what achievements you can still earn, and maybe even discover a few hidden ones.
