Should I have windows in my dog’s house that I am building?

I have to admit that I am a fan of do it yourself. I like to build almost everything from sheds to dog houses to platform beds. In my last project of building a dog house, I had to ask myself the question, should I have windows in the dog house that I am building? Sheds have windows, real houses have windows, but do dog houses need windows?

I started searching the internet for reliable dog house plans. I also did some research to find out why most dog houses don’t have windows. This is what I came up with. First of all, even dogs like to look out the window when they are inside the house, most of the time, because they want to go out and chase a bird or squirrel. Or maybe they just want to go out and snoop around. If they are in a doghouse, they can simply leave the house and enter the yard without you letting them out.

Second, if your dog’s house has windows, the likelihood of them being kept clean is next to zero. Your dog’s nose will be all over the window and he will get dirty in no time, which means he will no longer have a window to look out.

Now, for the most important reasons, dog houses don’t have windows. They just don’t do as good a job of keeping warm as an insulated solid wall. Also, during the summer they let in too much heat and the house will no longer stay as cool as you would like. There are a few things you can do to help with this, particularly the placement of the dog house in your yard. You can place it near a fence, near your house, or under a large tree. This will also help.

Of course, you can use your dog’s door as a window for your dog’s house. These clear plastic doors will help keep the elements out and give your dog a place to look if he so chooses. If you are building your own house for your dog, I recommend that you build an insulated dog house that is easy to clean. It would have the roof or one of the walls open so you can easily clean your dog’s house from time to time. You may also want to invest in a burrow bed during the winter months or add a heater to keep your dog warm enough.
