Potty train a Yorkshire Terrier

Small dogs like Yorkshire terriers can only make small messes, but you’ll have to pay the exact same carpet cleaning costs to clean your urine-stained carpet whether it’s a Yorkie or a Doberman. Potty training a Yorkshire terrier is basically the same as any dog.

When potty training a Yorkshire terrier, you should keep in mind that a small Yorkshire terrier equals a small bladder that won’t hold as much or for as long as a larger dog. So if you’re late for work or have been away for a long time, you may have a little accident to fix.

Living in an apartment or a house without a large garden is not a problem for a Yorkshire terrier. These dogs only need a small space to relieve themselves, which means even a flower bed can work wonders.

Some people like to tease pooches in their knitted sweaters, but it’s really more than just a fashion statement. During the winter months and cold climates, the change from hot inside to cold outside is very hard on a Yorkshire terrier’s small frame.

The sudden chill makes the effort of potty training a Yorkshire terrier more difficult, as it can distract him from the whole potty thing and cause him to run back inside. Once it warms up again, the boost will strike again and there is no way to go but to the mat. Sounds familiar? So, especially when potty training a Yorkshire terrier, make it easier on your Yorkie by getting him a nice warm sweater for winter.

Other options when potty training a Yorkshire terrier is to have a small box lined with newspaper available in your garage as a backup spot for potty training during inclement weather. Be sure to use this spot only in emergencies so your puppy continues to use his regular potty spot.

If your Yorkie often goes outdoors or you take him for walks in the parks, keep an eye on him. Watch for tall grass and bushes. Your dog may want to sniff a certain spot and could end up getting bitten by a snake.

Try to be courteous to your neighbors if your dog has made a little mess outside. It may be small, but it’s still dog poop that needs to be picked up quickly.

Not to mention, the dog poop on your shoes may not be visible until it’s tracked on the carpet. That definitely won’t earn your neighbors an invite to the next barbecue. It is your responsibility to clean up after your dog. And don’t try to get out of that by arguing that it doesn’t matter because he’s so small. Believe me, it matters to anyone who doesn’t have it.

Potty training a Yorkshire terrier is no different than it is for bargain dogs. You can start crate training first to help establish good behavior until a routine is established. Some puppies are so spoiled because they are so used to receiving a lot of attention that their owners fail. It is very important that you practice positive reinforcement so that your dog knows exactly what he needs to do to make you happy.
